United Methodist Church
Trinity Presents Performance Series

Through the celebration of the performing arts, the Trinity Presents Performance Series extends the reach of Trinity United Methodist Church’s offering for friendship and fellowship beyond the confines of the local congregation and presents it to the greater Little Rock and central Arkansas areas.

With this goal in mind, the Board of Directors for Trinity Presents…strives to present performances that will appeal to all audiences – both young and old alike. For the past 23 years, we have worked to bring in performers and groups that are uncommon for the Arkansas area. We have welcomed well-known and international performance by the Vienna Choir Boys, Chanticleer, Diane Bish, Dino and Sandi Patti – just to name a few.

We are excited to present an exciting line-up to our 24th season of the Trinity Presents Performance Series.

For more information, contact David Glaze, Minister of Music or Susan Brown, Trinity Presents Board of Directors.

JIMMY MCKISSIC
Sunday, September 12 at 6 pm

Born in Little Rock, James H. “Jimmy” McKissic began playing the piano at the age of three; first playing church hymns with one finger. Nurtured by his mother, he played by ear until he began to teach himself how to read music. At the age of thirteen McKissic began to study more classical music. McKissic entered Arkansas Mechanical and Normal College in Pine Bluff, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and graduated with a B.A., Music Degree.

Following graduation, McKissic auditioned at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music in New York, but he was not accepted at either institution. He enrolled in graduate studies at the University of California, Berkley where he began to enlarge his repertoire, and taught Chamber Music in the Music Department. In 1969 he was the recipient of the competitive Hertz Scholarship and began studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

McKissic made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1986 where he played “Carnaval” by Schumann. The New York Times critic wrote, “Carnaval had been played more correctly, but seldom with such character.”

Subsequently, McKissic has played Carnegie Hall 27 times and other venues in the United States, Europe, Middle East and Asia. He has lectured and taught at the University of California, Berkley and International School, Geneva. McKissic’s CD Jimmy Plays Schumann was released in 2007.

In March, 2010, McKissic celebrated his 70th birthday by presenting his first piano recital in Singapore at the Victorian-styled theatre playhouse Jubilee Hall. He is currently a regular performing artiste at Raffles Hotel in Singapore.

Mark your calendar to join us on Sunday, September 12, 2010, to experience this international piano virtuoso!

NEAL & LEANDRA
Sunday, October 24 at 6 pm

In a business where staying relevant is as important as staying solvent, Neal & Leandra, for more than twenty years, continue to do both. There have always been the trademark tight harmonies, the velvet voice of Leandra, who critics have likened to “listening to angels” (Minneapolis Star Tribune) and who City Pages crowned as Best Female Vocalist (2005). There have been accolades for Neal’s songwriting, the rare simplicity of which the Washington Post says “clearly masters the art of saying more with less,” and other critics have called “inspired” and “standards for the next century.”

There are the stories between songs about the quirkiness of life that have audiences coming to hear what new observation will have them laughing until it hurts.

There are awards, such as the prestigious McKnight Performing Artist Fellowship (2002) they received in recognition of excellence in live performance, and the McKnight Composers Fellowship (2010) in recognition of Neal’s masterful song writing.

And concert tours. In 45 states and Canada, from a tiny coffeehouse in San Luis Obispo, California to Carnegie Hall showcases, from the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis to a small town in Louisiana where they sang in a converted Confederate hospital. All have taught them you can make a difference wherever you are. Whether near or far, the root of it all is the music.

Their daughter was born in 1999 and they made the most important decision in their lives: to cut their touring by more than half and raise their daughter. The decision was a simple one - only play for people you like in venues you care about. That simplified everything and renewed their love of the music.

With this being their third appearance on the Trinity Presents stage, obviously Trinity is one of those venues and the feeling is certainly mutual. Come enjoy our friends on Sunday, October 24, 2010!

THE GLORYLAND PASTOR'S CHOIR
Sunday, January 30 at 6 pm

The Gloryland Pastor’s Choir of the Gloryland Family Fellowship Church was formed in April of 2008 by Pastor Cedric Hayes. The children of the church wanted to sing with the Mass Choir but their voices had not yet matured for the Mass Choir. Pastor Hayes did not want to deny them the chance to use their gifts for God so he started The Gloryland Pastor’s Choir. From the beginning there was something special about them. They are very anointed and gifted. Their sound is far beyond their age, which ranges from 4 to 18! They were asked to sing a selection from the Mass Choir’s repertoire at their first rehearsal and they nailed it! They knew they had something awesome.

The choir has a work ethic like an adult professional choir. Pastor Hayes gives them monthly challenges of very difficult songs to sing during their worship services and they meet every one with surpassing excellence! This is not your average youth choir. Once you have heard and seen them, they will leave you speechless! They have compiled many accomplishments in a short time. They won the 2008 Shout Hallelujah Showcase “Choir of the Year”, performed at War Memorial Stadium for The Battle of the Bands, won first place in The Harlem Globetrotters Choir Competition and then performed at a Harlem Globetrotters Basketball Game. They have appeared on The American Heart Association “Power To End Stroke” Tour. They have shared the stage with many National Recording Artists including Vickie Winans, and The Neville Sisters. Earlier this year, the Choir appeared on BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel. They travel nation-wide spreading pure excitement about God where ever they go.

TRINITY PRESENTS COLLEGIATE PERFORMANCE SHOWCASE
Sunday, April 3 at 6 pm

In an effort to bring you “the best of the best” each and every season, the Trinity Presents Board of Directors looks for new and innovative ways to identify and secure talented performers in a variety of disciplines. In the 2007-2008 season, we took a risk on something new and inaugurated the Collegiate Performance Showcase. The result was an overwhelming success.

In each of the first three years of the Showcase, student musicians representing colleges and universities across Arkansas submitted applications for a spot in our Showcase competition. The quality of the musicianship displayed in the audition videos was truly outstanding. This made the process of choosing only four finalists for the competition very challenging.

Again this fall, we will contact the faculty of the music departments of Arkansas colleges and universities and begin an application process for the competition. The applicants will submit audition video recordings and supplemental information about themselves. Through a screening process overseen by the Trinity Presents Board of Directors, the finalists will be selected and will participate in the performance here on the Trinity Presents stage on Sunday, April 3, 2011. Again this year, a panel of guest judges will review the performances and select our overall winner. Each finalist will receive a cash prize and the overall winner will receive an additional cash award.

The exciting part of this performance is not only knowing that we are helping young, aspiring artists to further their futures in music, the contents of the program will be a surprise until you arrive!

Please make plans to join us for the 4th Annual Trinity Presents Collegiate Performance Showcase. We look forward to welcoming all of you to this very special event. We know that our always loyal and supportive Trinity Presents audience will want to be here to support these talented young people!
